Toshiba develops and provides environmentally conscious products which contribute to reducing environmental impacts throughout the product life cycle. We implement product design that uses recycled materials, adopt materials that are easy to recycle, and promote materials recycling.

Recycling Products and used batteries should not be treated as household waste and should be collected separately. By ensuring proper product disposal, you will help prevent potential negative consequences for the environment and human health, which could otherwise be caused by inappropriate waste handling of products.

The aim of recycling is to gain an environmental benefit by means of re-use, reconditioning, and/or recovery of material. Dedicated recycling sites ensure that environmentally harmful components are properly handled and securely disposed. Toshiba and its partners have contracted competent service providers to ensure the best recycling of our products, including recyling of batteries and packaging.

Greening in logistics

Transportation and logistics contribute strongly to greenhouse gas emissions, so Toshiba aims to reduce weight and packaging. Efficient packaging design plays an important role in helping to reduce emissions produced in the logistic process. Smaller package form factor means that more product boxes are able to fit on one palette; more palettes thus fit on each truck, and therefore fewer trucks are required for transportation. This subsequently results in less CO2 emissions.

This results in a reduction of energy needed for transportation of goods:

  • Thanks to the reduced deployment of raw material, today’s Toshiba TV sets weigh 30% less than the models launched in 2007.
  • Since 2008, we have achieved up to a 44% packaging weight saving on average 81.28 cm (32”) models and up to 63% volume on average 117 cm (46”) models. For 66.04 cm (40”) models, we reduced the average volume of the packaging by up to 50% and the average weight by 29%.
  • Shrinking the packaging of an average 38.1 cm (15”) laptop leads to a 16% volume reduction and makes it possible to pack 75 rather than only 54 pieces on a pallet.

Case studies

Greening in offices and sites
Not only do the products themselves coupled with the manufacturing processes contribute to greenhouse emissions, buildings where people work also need to be considered for the company's ecological footprint. For this reason, Toshiba takes measures to improve the infrastructure in its office buildings and updates site management to reduce power consumption.

Less travel activities, less CO2 emissions
Communications between teams in different countries are essential in Toshiba's business processes. To help make business processes more efficient and to reduce Toshiba's carbon footprint, the company pushed the usage of video conferences. Toshiba has installed 16 video conferencing systems across Europe to facilitate collaboration with colleagues in other offices while minimising the need for travelling.

Case study: Germany
Since 2010, the Toshiba Europe GmbH office in Neuss uses electricity from 100% renewable energy sources, which means that 0g/kWh CO2 is emitted. Another example is the exchange of old street lights in the parking area of the office building in Neuss with 23 Toshiba LED lamps, which led to an energy saving of approximately 75% per year compared to the old lamps. In addition, these new Toshiba LED street lights illuminate the parking area better.

Case Study: Poland
Toshiba’s production and sales company for LCD TVs, Toshiba Television Central Europe (TTCE) in Poland, takes environmental issues in account during all the phases of a TV’s lifecycle. TTCE is ISO 14001 certified and constantly is improving its environmental, health and safety management system ISO14001/OHSAS 18001.

  • 100% of the factory electricity is renewable source tariff (hydroelectric).
  • Economical handling of material and efficient recycling: TTCE has achieved zero waste emission during the whole production process of TVs. This means that the ratio of waste that can be separated before going to landfill is higher than 99.5%.
