An LED is an electronic component, more precisely an electroluminescent diode (LED is the acronym for Light Emitting Diode). The technology was developed during the 1970s and was used mainly for red and green warning lights. White light was developed during the 1990s and was obtained by mixing with a third colour, blue.
With new manufacturing methods it became possible to produce higher wattages, allowing the development of lighting that was equivalent to conventional lamps. LED technology has taken over the world of lighting as the most innovative invention since the incandescent lamp invented by Edison.
The combined expertise of the “Lighting & Technology Corporation” and “Semiconductor Company” divisions gives the Toshiba group a full understanding of LED production, enabling it to offer a complete range of lighting.
