Research Engineer

The Speech Technology Group of Toshiba Europe is looking for exceptional candidates to join our team of researchers. We seek a creative mind who can significantly advance our state-of-the-art for distant conversational automatic speech recognition (ASR) or statistical dialogue systems (SDS). We are looking for candidates with background in signal processing, machine learning, acoustic modelling or expertise in building state-of-the-art systems for ASR or Dialogue. Your research ideas should have a solid theoretical foundation, and you are willing to demonstrate practical value through prototype implementations.

Publishing at major conferences and in top journals is widely encouraged and is our primary objective. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with world leading academic groups or institutions across the European Union as well as with in the Toshiba Corporate R&D Center in Japan.


  • Develop and investigate new ideas in speech technology for ASR or Dialogue modelling
  • Contribute to Toshiba’s future technologies
  • Represent Toshiba by publishing in conferences and journals

Key Qualifications:

  • A PhD or Masters with equivalent experience in the areas of speech technology related to automatic speech recognition, statistical dialogue modelling, machine learning or a related field (Post-doctoral/industrial experience is beneficial).
  • In-depth knowledge of fundamentals and state-of-the-art in any of the above areas
  • Strong publication record at major conferences and journals
  • Experience with deep neural networks and machine learning
  • Self-motivated and excellent problem solving skills
  • Solid programming skills with Python and/or C/C++ and proficient with Unix/Linux
  • Experience with speech and/or ML toolkits, e.g. Kaldi, TensorFlow, PyDial, PyTorch, etc.

Expertise: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Speech Processing.

Call for Interns and Placements at Toshiba Europe Speech Technology Group

The Toshiba Europe Speech Technology Group in Cambridge UK is looking for interns. We offer a limited number of internships to PhD students in their 2nd year or higher. Please note that permission to work in the UK is a necessary condition to apply. Applications are accepted all year round.

STG works in exciting areas of speech recognition and dialog management, putting an emphasis on statistical approaches. The Toshiba lab is closely linked to academia and we encourage scientific publication.

Interns will be working on a well defined project and will be assigned an experienced researcher as mentor. The length of the internship is typically 3 months (negotiable). Current topics of interest include: Data Driven Spoken Dialogue Systems, Emotion and Dialogue Quality Detection, Distant Speech Recognition. Strong programming skills are essential.

The Toshiba Lab is located in the Science Park of the university city of Cambridge. Summer activities such as punting on the river Cam, concerts in college chapels and picnic lunches provide fun during breaks from research.
