Research Engineer – Communications and Signal Processing Group

The Communications and Signal Processing Group is looking for an exceptional candidate to join their team of researchers. The Group conduct research on a variety of communication topics, ranging from power amplifier and digital baseband to smart grid research.

The applicant should be a junior researcher with a Ph.D. in the relevant research area with a maximum of 2–3 years postdoc experience. The relevant areas of specialisation should be in advanced digital signal processing, modulation and coding, massive MIMO, full duplex radio, new waveforms, or physical layer techniques relevant for 5G. Individuals with a strong background in applied mathematics, statistics, or optimization are welcome to apply. The research engineer is expected to be motivated to innovate, produce high quality publications, able to work independently while thriving in a team environment.

The applicant should have a PhD in a relevant area (or working towards completion of a PhD programme), a good understanding of digital communication systems, especially modulation and coding, a strong background in signal processing for communications and be proficient in MATLAB programming. Understanding of mathematical optimisation will be a plus.

In addition to the above skills it is desirable but not necessary that the applicant is familiar with wireless standards such as 3GPP LTE/LTE-A Systems, IEEE 802.11n/ac/ax, or Bluetooth. Experience with DSP boards and/or FPGA programming is highly desirable.

Researcher in Quantum Communications

Applications are invited for a research post at Toshiba Research Europe Ltd working in the general area of Quantum Communications. We seek a highly talented individual to lead work on next generation systems with new functionality and greatly reduced size and cost. They will conduct world leading research, as well as contribute to the commercialization of quantum communication technology.

Candidates should hold (or expect) a PhD in Physics, Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline. They will have demonstrated the ability to conduct first class research, as evidenced by a strong publication record, as well as creativity, enthusiasm and an aptitude for experimental work. Prior knowledge of quantum communications, fibre optic systems and/or high speed electronics would be an advantage.

Call for Interns and Placements at Toshiba Research Speech Technology Group

The Toshiba Research Speech Technology Group in Cambridge UK is looking for interns. We offer a limited number of internships to PhD students in their 2nd year or higher. We also offer short-term placements for visiting researchers/Professors. Please note that permission to work in the UK is a necessary condition to apply. Applications are accepted all year round.

STG works in exciting areas of speech synthesis, speech recognition and dialog management, putting an emphasis on statistical approaches. The Toshiba lab is closely linked to academia and we encourage scientific publication.

Interns will be working for three months on a well defined project and will be assigned an experienced researcher as mentor. Current topics of interest include: expressive HMM speech synthesis, Distant Speech Recognition, Data Driven Spoken Dialogue Systems. Strong programming skills are essential.

Visiting researchers and University Professors will have the opportunity to work with real-world data and feel the impact of their work by developing solutions in products that are expected to be used by millions.

The Toshiba Lab is located in the Science Park of the university city of Cambridge. Summer activities such as punting on the river Cam, concerts in college chapels and picnic lunches provide fun during breaks from research.

Early Stage Researchers in Quantum Photonics

Two R&D positions are available at Toshiba Research Europe Ltd to conduct research on Quantum Photonic Devices, as part of an EU-funded Initial Training Network. The projects will research solid state devices for the generation, storage and manipulation of entangled light, with applications in quantum communications, sensing and computing. The work will involve device fabrication and characterization, experiments in quantum optics and modeling/analysis. It is expected to lead the award of a PhD degree.

Candidates should hold (or expect) a first degree in Physics, Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline. They will have demonstrated academic success at the highest level, creativity, enthusiasm and shown an aptitude for experimental Physics or Engineering.

Eligibility rules require candidates to have been resident outside the UK for at least two of the past three years and to be within four years of their first degree. They should be willing to travel to and collaborate with European-based members of the network.

Research Internship (PhD Level)

The Toshiba Research Computer Vision Group in Cambridge is looking for interns. We offer a limited number of internships to PhD students in their 2nd year or higher. (Please note that permission to work in the UK is a necessary condition to apply.)

We are a young team of researchers working in exciting areas of computer vision, including 3D reconstruction, recognition, gesture recognition and body capture. The Toshiba lab is closely linked to academia and we encourage scientific publication.

Interns will be working for three months on a well-defined project and will be assigned an experienced researcher as mentor. Current topics of interest include: visual SLAM, 3D reconstruction, and Machine Learning (e.g. CNNs). Strong programming skills are essential.
