HSBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toshiba.eu\/quantum\/news\/hsbc-becomes-first-bank-to-join-the-uks-pioneering-commercial-quantum-secure-metro-network\/\">is the first bank to join the commercial trial<\/a> &#8211; a milestone moment in the bank\u2019s history, and a significant step towards protecting its business and its customers data from potential cyber-attacks by quantum computers in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HSBC\u2019s Global Head of Quantum Technologies, Philip Intallura, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toshiba.eu\/quantum\/insights\/toshiba-open-sessions-2023-chapter-1-hsbcs-trailblazing-quantum-roadmap-reshaping-bankings-future\/\">sat down with representatives from Toshiba, BT, and AWS to explain why the quantum network trial is so significant<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Building a national network<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conversation with Matt McDowell, Toshiba\u2019s Head of Communications, HSBC\u2019s Philip Intallura explained how, for the bank, the journey to quantum-resistant technologies couldn\u2019t have started soon enough. \u201cThe impact that quantum computing can have in financial services from a malicious use case perspective is tremendous,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/893313446?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" title=\"Toshiba Open Sessions 2023: The use case in focus\"><\/iframe><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>HSBC is acting now in order to mitigate these potential threats. The commercial QSMN trial involves the quantum-secure transmission of test data over fibre-optic cables between its global HQ in Canary Wharf and a data centre in Berkshire, 62 km away. The network uses quantum mechanics to protect communications &#8211; delivered by Toshiba\u2019s technology, via BT\u2019s networks, and connecting to the Cloud Edge supplied by AWS Edge Compute Services. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toshiba.eu\/quantum\/insights\/toshiba-open-sessions-2023-chapter-2-todays-quantum-challenges-tomorrows-secure-solutions\/\">Find out more about how the network runs, and what the collaboration means for HSBC\u2019s data security in a quantum age<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the commercial trial for HSBC is running between two sites, but Andrew Lord, Senior Manager of Optical Research at BT, explained how this could be scaled in the future. \u201cIn a sense the challenge has been not so much developing the hardware, but architecting that into a network configuration,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is what makes the QSMN commercial trial unique &#8211; it\u2019s a trial of an actual network, deployed over actual network fibres and datacentres that can serve multiple uses in an urban environment, rather than being a new dedicated point-to-point link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what is innovative about this. Phase one of the commercial trial involved testing the ability of the QSMN to manage core use cases across different areas of the business. Chief among these was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsbc.com\/news-and-views\/news\/media-releases\/2023\/hsbc-pioneers-quantum-protection-for-ai-powered-fx-trading\">using QKD to successfully secure a \u20ac30 million trading scenario<\/a> from Euros to US dollars on HSBC AI Markets, the bank\u2019s digital offering that uses natural language processing to enhance how investors interact with global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe put a huge amount of effort and resources into our cyber infrastructure to protect our data and our payments. AI might have overshadowed the hype around quantum, but Intallura believes this won\u2019t be the case for long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe thing that will catalyse quantum is when people can feel it.
