Toshiba Europe Limited (“Toshiba”) is proud to announce that Dr. Andrew Shields, Vice President of Toshiba Europe and Head of the Quantum Technology division, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (“FRS”), one of the world’s most prestigious scientific honours.
The appointment recognises Dr. Shields’ exceptional contributions in the field of quantum technology and marks a significant achievement for Toshiba’s long-standing leadership in advanced research and innovation. His pioneering work has helped establish Toshiba as a global leader in secure quantum networking technologies and has contributed to the development of next-generation cybersecurity infrastructure and the future quantum internet.
Over the course of his distinguished career at Toshiba, Dr. Shields has played a leading role in advancing quantum optics and secure quantum networking systems from fundamental research to real-world deployment. Under his leadership, Toshiba has delivered groundbreaking innovations in quantum key distribution and secure communications technologies, working closely with academic institutions, industry partners, and governments around the world.
Dr. Shields’ election further strengthens Toshiba’s distinguished scientific legacy and reflects more than two decades of pioneering research, development, and commercialisation in quantum technologies throughout his career at Toshiba.
He joins an exceptional group of Toshiba leaders recognised by the Royal Society. Professor Sir Michael Pepper FRS (former managing director) and Professor Roberto Cipolla FRS (current managing director) of Toshiba’s Cambridge Research Laboratory were previously elected Fellows in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions through their work at the University of Cambridge and Toshiba.

Dr. Andrew Shields said:
“I am deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. This recognition reflects the collaborative efforts of many talented colleagues and partners I have had the privilege to work with throughout my career at Toshiba and across the wider scientific community. I believe quantum technologies will play a transformative role in our future IT infrastructure, and I am excited to support the Royal Society’s mission to promote excellence in this field.”
Commenting on the appointment, Kei Hirata, President and CEO of Toshiba Europe, said:
“We warmly congratulate Andrew on his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This prestigious honour reflects his outstanding scientific leadership, his dedication to advancing quantum technologies, and the profound impact his work continues to have on secure communications and the wider scientific community. Andrew’s achievements are also a testament to Toshiba’s long-term commitment to research excellence and to developing technologies that address some of society’s most important challenges.”
Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is the UK’s national academy of sciences and recognises individuals who have made substantial contributions to the advancement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering, and medical science. Fellowship is awarded to scientists whose work has had a transformative impact within their field.
Dr. Shields’ election represents an important milestone not only in his distinguished career, but also in the growing global recognition of quantum technology as a critical enabler of future digital infrastructure — and of Toshiba’s role at the forefront of this innovation.
