CETIN has successfully tested an optical connection secured against attacks by quantum computers

Prague, November 6, 2023 – CETIN, a leading provider of telecommunications infrastructure services in Central and Eastern Europe, has collaborated with partners Adtran, Adva Network Security, ČVUT, NTT Czech Republic and Toshiba, to successfully test an optical fibre that is encrypted through QKD (Quantum Key Distribution). This represents a significant milestone in the development of quantum-secured services and mitigates the risks posed by the development of high-performance quantum computers.

The quantum secured optical fibre uses DWDM 10Gb/s data flow, running between the CETIN company headquarters in Prague Liben and its data centre in Prague-Michle. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a method of distributing quantum safe encryption keys, that uses the quantum properties of light to encrypt the data that is shared across the two locations. While quantum computing is not yet available to the mass market, the rapid advancement of quantum-based technologies is raising questions on how we protect our data moving forward.

Quantum encrypted communication through the exchange of quantum keys (QKD) minimises the risks posed by powerful quantum computers that are capable of decrypting information that would take a classical supercomputer thousands of years, in a matter of minutes. The increased uptake and growing performance of these quantum computers threatens existing methods of key generation used for today’s asymmetric encryption methods. Communication encrypted using quantum key exchange (QKD) responds to these risks and marks a new era of security that is Quantum secure.

The test of the new optical route is a crucial step for CETIN in their development journey of quantum-secured services, that includes dedicated broadband end-to-end encrypted connections provided over private optical networks CETIN.

CETIN collaborates with partners Adtran, Adva Network Security, ČVUT, NTT Czech Republic and Toshiba on the project.
